I've started swimming this semester at Cleveland State's Busbey Natatorium. Isn't it beautiful? They have a 10 meter! Crazy. I never thought I would swim at a pool with a 10 meter platform, but CSU has one, and I am a student, and therefore I get to use the pool and the Rec Center for free. After all that's happened in the last few years, I want to (and now am able) to start exercising again. I've thought about what I should do, and when I hear my friends and family talk about the marathons they've run or are training for, I think I would like to do that just for the shear glory of it. But, my knee problems remind me that running is not my cup of tea.
Every time I see these diving boards I get a wistful feeling and sigh about diving again. Then I remember when I dislocated my right knee cap doing a front double my senior year in high school, and when I broke my foot diving in Guatemala (which I am now mostly recovered from).
But SWIMMING. Swimming can be for me. It is certainly not as terrifying or as exhilarating as diving, and doesn't seem as glorious as a marathon. But it feels good, doesn't hurt my knees, and it is a great work out.
So, I am trying to swim about 3-4 times a week for 30 minutes without stopping. My current goal to work up to is to swim a kilometer in about 30 min. without stopping. (1000 meters or 10 long laps of the pool). It may not seem like a lot to some people, but for me it is a good goal. I think it might take me a while, but I've set my mind to it, and usually when that happens, somehow I can do it!
In the Olympics, they have 10 km marathon swims. Maybe I can work up to that someday. 10,000 meters (100 long laps....currently that sounds impossible, but we'll see).
